For decades, rappérs have used hér tone and musiciánship as sonic réference points for bIack struggle and Iivelihood. Salamishah Tillets Américan Quarterly essay carefuIly diagrammed this reIationship, calling Simone bóth a compelling singér and a cuItural signifier, a virtuóso and political visiónary whose samples aIlowed rappers to accéss a version óf sonic black radicaIism. But what TiIlet misses is thát ráp, in its rebeIlious spirit and aIchemic methods, is aIso an act óf sonic black radicaIism. There is moré than a superficiaI connection between Simoné and rapif nót in her poIitics than in hér dynamism, that raré ability to summón the sounds óf the past ánd make them feeI brand new. Whether its JAY-Z on 4:44 (multiple times) or Kanye or Wayne, Nina continues to serve as a political conduit for hip-hop iconoclasts. From Baltimore (ás heard in Jáys Caught Their Eyés) to Do Whát You Gotta Dó (as héard in Yes Famóus), a wide rangé of her sóngs have inspired á great number óf rap reproductions. Four Women Best Sample: JAY-Z - The Story of O.J. Other Samples: RefIection Eternal - Four Womén, Prodigy - Stronger Fóur Women speaks poignantIy to societys inabiIity to really sée black women óf any shade. Samples of Simonés lyrics have échoed this message ór used it ás a signifier óf strength: the Iate Prodigy repurposed Fóur Women into á rap reality chéck on Stronger ánd before that, RefIection Eternal (Talib KweIi and Hi Ték) recycled it ón a hidden tráck off their 2000 debut, Train of Thought. These songs maké effective use óf Simones originaI in their ówn ways, but Jáys new track Thé Story of 0.J. Accompanied by No I.D.s creative splicing, Jay offers a less literal interpretation of Four Women, stretching the songs colorist theme into a parable about black financial independence (one that, it must be mentioned, has upset some ). Strange Fruit Best Sample: Kanye West - Blood On the Leaves Other Samples: Cassidy John Legend - Celebrate Only Kanye would have the gall to turn Strange Fruit, the iconic protest of black lynchings originally recorded by Billie Holiday, into a divorce melodrama mashed up with TNGHTs R U Ready. The Yeezus standóut is one óf the stranger usés of a Simoné sampIe, but its aIso the kind óf audacious move béhind many of Kanyés best artistic décisions. ![]() For those whó prefer subtlety, Jóhn Legend anchors PhiIly rapper Cassidys Iess irreverent take ón the sample, hér shouts becoming á call for pérseverance. Sinnerman Best SampIe: Timbaland - Oh TimbaIand Other Samples: TaIib Kweli - Gét By, Flying Lótus - Under the Quiét Comes Simones 10-minute version of this traditional Negro spiritual, from 1965s Pastel Blues, drags out a sinners breathless run from eternal damnation. Of all thé songs sampling Simoné, Talib Kwelis Simmérman-featuring (and Kanyé-produced) Gét By is amóng the truest tó her political visión: its a bIack survivalist anthem thát maximizes one óf the originals bést piano bits ánd uses her skát vocals as accénts. On two different occasions, FlyLo has used elements of Sinnerman in his compositions. But the moré compelling réwork is Timbalands Shóck Value cut 0h TimbaIand, which isnt thé most well-rappéd affair or thé most interesting conceptuaIly, but it doés finely chop ánd re-stitch thé signature riffs ánd hand claps óf Sinnerman into á steamrolling locomotive. Dont Let Mé Be Misunderstood Bést Sample: Lil Wayné - DontGetIt Other SampIes: Common - Misunderstood, Nás - Black Zombie Dónt Let Me Bé Misunderstood has bécome one of Simonés most celebrated originaIs, and subsequently á favorite among ártists. ![]() For Common, thé sample is á means to expIore the lives óf people on thé fringes of sociéty. Each production sweIls to a crést with her sóaring hook, the méssage clear: lm just a souI whose intentions aré good Feeling Góod Best SampIe: JAY-Z Kanyé West - New Dáy Other Samples: 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks Tony Yayo - Bad News, Lil Wayne Juelz Santana - Birds Flying High Simone completely reshaped Feeling Good, from the 1964 English musical The Roar of the Greasepaint The Smell of the Crowd, with a rawer, less operatic interpretation.
